The organisers of this year’s conference are keen to promote again the idea of ‘poster presentations’, to be located in a room at the conference venue dedicated to this purpose.

The organisers of this year’s conference are keen to promote again the idea of ‘poster presentations’, to be located in a room at the conference venue dedicated to this purpose.

The idea is to give a showcase to a range of interests and projects that are either not geared towards formal conference presentation, or are very much works in progress.

The PPC would like to invite people to get in touch and let them know if they would like to have space to share their research, a special clinical interest, or a professional focus.

One example of the kind of thing they will include is a ‘stall’ run by Ferelyth Watt and members of the group helping the membership to coordinate its thinking in relation to Payment by Results and CYP-IAPT (in parallel with their scheduled workshop during one of the conference slots).

Another example would be a display describing doctoral work in progress, or a completed thesis. We hope that the Trainee Forum will also hold a ‘stall’ carrying on their work from the Bulletin and the website.

‘Poster’ presentations should ideally include the use of visual materials but they can be very simple – the main purpose of this space for our purpose is to get people talking to each other abut possible shared interests. The image above shows an example of a ‘poster’ presentation about doctoral work that was part of the NSCAP 10th Anniversary event, and gives an idea of how compact but conversation-prompting these can be. It was created with only a few weeks’ preparations time, so we know it can be done.

If you would like table and screen space in the allocated room, please contact Phillip McGill at prmcgill@msn.com no later than Friday 14 June, letting him know your name or the name of the special interest group. The space will be limited, so please let us know as soon as you can.

We will be producing a guide to the presentations on offer, which will be in the delegate pack, and the ‘poster presentation’ room will be clearly identified as part of the programme itself.

Child and adolescent psychotherapist Dorothy Judd gave her expert opinion to a real life scenario featured in last week’s Problem Solved column in the Guardian.

A reader had wrote in asking for advice about favouritism – which she experienced in her own childhood – being carried out in the next generation by her parents.

In the article Dorothy says: “The favoured siblings aren’t necessarily better off. It’s not straightforward, being the favourite.”

She goes on to suggest: “If you feel you’ve done as much talking as you can [with your parents] then maybe it’s better to turn to other satisfactions.”

Read the article in full here

Trainee members of the ACP can now visit their own dedicated section of the website for the first time.

The Trainee Forum, which is a regular feature of The Bulletin, has now been included as an option in the drop down menu for the members’ area.

Here you will find information about the Forum itself, its aims, ways in which you can get involved and who your current representatives are.

As a space to gather ideas from across all of the training schools, it is hoped the Forum page will provide a valuable online resource for members throughout their period of training.

ACP members working in private practice can have their details listed on our newly upgraded Find A Therapist facility.

Members of the public can perform searches for individual child psychotherapists by location, specialism or language spoken.

The upgraded system is flexible so if you can’t see your particular specialism, language or location we can add it on for you once we create your personal profile.

Images have been added for some members and we would encourage you to send in a head and shoulders shot so we can upload it to your profile.

Here are examples of members who have added pictures to their profiles:

Example 1

Example 2

Members whose profile is already listed: please contact the ACP office if you would like your profile edited. Members are unable to edit their Find A Therapist profile themselves.

ACP member Louise Emanuel has been interviewed for NurseryWorld about the recent announcements to reduce ratios of nursery staff to children and why she believes too few staff can lead to premature independence.

In the article Louise, who works as a consultant child and adolescent psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic, says: “Research has shown that infants and toddlers need an emotionally available carer, who is ‘attuned’ and responsive to their communications, in order to develop psychologically, socially and cognitively.”

She explains that the reduction of staff to toddlers may lead even young babies to find ways of coping with the frustration of having to wait too long for the attention of adults they depend on for their care.

“They may resort to intense self-soothing, hyper-kinetic activity, or develop signs of ‘premature self-sufficiency’ or ‘toughening up’, to evade feeling dependent on others for their gratification,” she says.

The ACP’s Unite representatives would like to draw members’ attention to a concerning development regarding the Health and Social Care Act.

Currently, regulations are about to go through parliament, without debate, as they are secondary legislation to the Act. These regulations affect section 75 of the act, on competition. They appear to impose a strict obligation on Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) to put all services out to competitive tender or Any Qualified provider, except in an “emergency”. This contradicts assurances that were given by Andrew Lansley, Earl Howe and others that CCGs would not be obliged to use competition and they would be free to choose when to use it.

There is a campaign now to put pressure on both houses to debate and vote on these regulations. There is very little time to achieve this.

There are several things you could do:

1. Write by 3 March to seclegscrutiny@parliament.uk

This is the Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee in the House of Lords. Please let them know we were given assurances by ministers and guidance that suggested competition would be used judiciously and in a restrained manner. These regulations contradict that reassurance – the reality is very different.

2. Write to your MP asking them to demand a debate. We attach a parliamentary briefing about the regulations that you could use as the basis for a letter.

You might also wish to look at a useful recent article in the Guardian

The second and final phase of our project to upgrade the ACP website and offer members an accessible, interactive and user-friendly experience has now been completed. In order to facilitate a brand new Find a Therapist function as well as offering members the chance to sign up to recurring payments for their annual subscription fees, further improvements were needed to our current site.

In July 2012 we launched the first phase of the project which saw members use an online payment gateway for the first time – our direct debit process having expired some months earlier. We would like to thank the majority of members who used this system and those who persevered despite some technical difficulties. We hope the latest version of our online payment gateway will provide a much smoother process for members to pay their fees for 2013.

SUBSCRIPTION FEE PAYMENTS 2013: Further instructions about how to pay for this year have been sent to members. The deadline to pay fees for 2013 has been extended to Friday 22 March 2013.

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR 2013: your payments have been recorded by the ACP administrator and you will receive further instructions about accessing your personal profile shortly.

FIND A THERAPIST: members working privately should check their listing on the improved facility. If you would like your entry to be edited please contact nina.jacobs@childpsychotherapy.org.uk
