The BPC and UKCP have launched a joint report which shows that access to the long-term psychotherapy required by many mental health patients is getting worse not better, with many patients effectively giving up on the NHS and turning to therapy in the private sector.
The findings of Addressing the deterioration in public psychotherapy provision are based on a survey of more than 2,000 psychotherapists carried out by both organisations.
The report also highlights a worrying and growing trend of public sector therapists leaving the NHS because services are being closed, despite rising demand, and because they feel that longer-term work with clients is no longer valued.
The report was discussed on last week's broadcast of BBC Radio 4's You and Yours. You can listen to the programme here
