Child psychotherapist Ryan Lowe was asked to contribute her expert opinion to an article, I really didn't like my son, in the Family section of the Guardian (February 9).
In the article, a mother describes how she often couldn't stand her 10-year-old son, but didn't know why. She goes on to talk about how she felt and how she rescued their relationship.
Ryan, who is a consultant child, adolescent and family therapist, advises that family therapy can help if the situation is cyclical "because unless someone steps into change the patterns - how parent relates to child and vice versa - it just perpetuates".
