Mental Health Awareness Week May 2025

Child and adolescent psychotherapists are trained in assessing risk and supporting children, young people and families who are struggling with their mental health and are at risk of suicide. Many child and adolescent psychotherapists also work as part of the crisis team in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in the NHS.
This year we are sharing important guidance created by NHS England about staying safe from suicide. These principles are advisory for all mental health practitioners, and promote a shift towards a more holistic, person-centred approach rather than relying on risk prediction, which is unreliable because suicidal thoughts can change quickly. Instead, the guidance recommends using a method based on understanding each person’s situation and managing their safety.
